Every stage of the vineyard has its charm , but few are as visual and exciting as veraison . It's one of those moments that announces that the harvest is approaching, that the fruit has ripened enough to begin to transform, and that the next wine is closer to being born.
At Del Álamo Family Vineyards, we experience each year as a small event, especially because it marks the beginning of the final stretch of the vine's cycle. And this year we feel it with special excitement. From these bunches, which are already beginning to color, our next BeHappy will be born!
🌿 What is veraison?
Veraison is the moment when grapes change color . It's a natural process that occurs when the fruit begins to ripen. White grapes turn from deep green to yellowish or golden hues, while red grapes gradually turn purple, red, or even dark blue.
This change d The color, in addition to being aesthetic, indicates that the plant has stopped prioritizing the growth of the berry and is beginning to concentrate sugars, aromas, and other essential compounds for wine . From this point on, the grape gains sweetness, loses acidity, and begins to develop its identity.
🍇 When does veraison occur?
It depends on the variety, the climate, and the location of the vineyard. Generally, in areas like ours (La Mancha–Toledo), veraison usually occurs between late July and early August . This year, we're seeing it right now.
It's a time of constant observation. Winegrowers monitor the progress of each variety, plot, and vine to make decisions about vineyard management, irrigation, and the optimal harvest date.
🍷 Why is it so important?
Because it marks the beginning of phenolic maturation , the moment in which the compounds responsible for the wine's color, flavor, and texture develop. In other words, what will give a glass of BeHappy , for example, that vibrant color, that juicy fruit on the palate, and that freshness that embodies us.
It's also key for making decisions in the winery: how much time remains until harvesting, whether it's necessary to advance or delay harvesting depending on the weather, or whether it's appropriate to provide targeted irrigation to avoid water stress on the plants.
📸 A spectacle for the senses
Visually, veraison is a spectacle. Walking through the vineyard these days, you'll come across bunches that look hand-painted , mixing green berries with others already colored. The summer light further accentuates this transformation.
We want to share this beautiful process with you. Because behind every bottle of wine there are months of work, but also moments like these, full of beauty, emotion, and meaning .
💛 Our wines start here
Our modern and authentic wines begin in our vineyards right at this moment, when the grapes begin to tell us they're ready.
We'll tell you more soon. In the meantime, enjoy the images on display, which speak for themselves. The veraison has arrived, and with it the promise of a new vintage.
